The Ecommerce Store Launch Checklist (50 Things Before Going Live)

The Ecommerce Store Launch Checklist (50 Things Before Going Live)

Most launch-day problems trace back to a step that was skipped weeks earlier, not something that went wrong on the day itself. This checklist covers 50 items across product setup, payments and legal, design and content, and final testing, organized so you can work through it section by section rather than hunting for what's left. Not every item applies to every store; skip what's genuinely not relevant to your setup rather than forcing every box to be checked.

Product and Catalog (Items 1–10)

  • Every product has at least three photos, including one showing scale or use.

  • Product titles use terms a customer would actually search, not internal names.

  • Descriptions include specific dimensions, materials, and care instructions.

  • Variants (size, color, style) are set up correctly and priced accurately.

  • Stock counts are accurate and low-stock alerts are enabled.

  • Products are organized into logical, clearly named categories.

  • SEO title, meta description, and URL slug are set for each product.

  • Related or recommended products are configured where relevant.

  • Any pre-order or backorder items are clearly labeled as such.

  • Product weights and dimensions are entered accurately for shipping calculations.

Payments and Checkout (Items 11–20)

  • At least two payment methods are enabled (a card processor plus a digital wallet).

  • A real test transaction has been completed successfully end to end.

  • Guest checkout is enabled if your platform supports it.

  • Currency settings match your primary customer base.

  • Order confirmation emails are sending and landing outside spam.

  • Abandoned-cart recovery emails are set up and tested.

  • Checkout form fields are minimized to only what's truly required.

  • Refund and cancellation settings are configured correctly.

  • Any discount codes or launch promotions are tested before going live.

  • Payment processor account is fully verified, not still pending approval.

Shipping, Tax, and Legal (Items 21–30)

  • Shipping rates (flat-rate or carrier-calculated) are set for every region you'll sell into.

  • A free-shipping threshold is configured if your margins support one.

  • Sales tax is configured correctly for every region where you have nexus.

  • You're registered with the relevant tax authority, not just relying on automated calculation.

  • A clear shipping policy page is published and linked from product pages.

  • A clear return and refund policy page is published and linked from product pages.

  • Terms of service and privacy policy pages are published.

  • Your business is registered appropriately (sole proprietorship, LLC, or equivalent).

  • A business bank account is set up and separate from personal finances.

  • Any required business licenses or sales tax permits are in place.

Design and Content (Items 31–40)

  • Homepage clearly states what you sell within the first screen a visitor sees.

  • Navigation has five or fewer top-level menu items.

  • Every core page has been previewed on a mobile-sized screen.

  • Page load speed has been checked and heavy images compressed.

  • Contact information or a contact form is easy to find.

  • About page explains who's behind the store and why it exists.

  • Favicon and browser tab title are set correctly.

  • Any broken links or placeholder "lorem ipsum" text have been removed.

  • Brand colors and fonts are consistent across every page.

  • Social media links (if applicable) are added and working.

Marketing and Final Testing (Items 41–50)

  • Analytics tracking is installed and confirmed working before launch.

  • An email signup or "coming soon" list has been building pre-launch.

  • At least 10–15 pieces of launch content (photos, videos, founder story) are ready.

  • SEO basics are set: page titles, meta descriptions, and a submitted sitemap.

  • A friend or family member outside your household has completed a test purchase.

  • Every confirmation and notification email has been checked for accuracy.

  • Customer support email or chat is set up and monitored.

  • A launch-week promotion or incentive is ready if you're planning one.

  • You've decided who's responsible for fulfilling the first orders and how quickly.

  • You have a plan for reviewing the first two weeks of traffic and sales data.

What to Do If You Can't Finish Every Item

Not every item on this list is equally urgent. Payments, checkout, and legal basics (items 11–30) should be treated as non-negotiable before launch — these are the items most likely to cause a lost sale, a compliance problem, or an angry customer if skipped. Design polish and marketing content (items 31–50) matter, but a store that's functionally solid with a slightly rough design will outperform a beautifully designed store with a broken checkout every time. When time is short, prioritize in that order.

Ecommerce Launch Checklist FAQ

What's the most important thing to check before launching an online store?

A completed, real end-to-end test purchase is the single most valuable check — it surfaces checkout, payment, and confirmation-email problems that are otherwise easy to miss until a real customer hits them.

For a store with 5–10 products, working through a checklist like this typically takes a few focused hours spread across payments, legal basics, and final testing, assuming products and design are already largely in place.

Yes — an unclear or missing return policy is one of the most common, avoidable reasons for cart abandonment, even on inexpensive products.

Generally yes, as long as checkout, payments, and legal basics are solid. A functionally reliable store with a simple design will outperform a polished store with unresolved checkout issues.

Watch where visitors drop off in checkout, track which questions customers repeat in support messages, and fix the two or three biggest friction points before investing further in marketing or traffic.
